Resume screening without black-box candidate ranking
How to use AI for faster evidence review while avoiding automatic hire-or-reject decisions and unexplained candidate ordering.
Automating extraction is different from automating judgment. A safer resume workflow lets software find claims relevant to an approved rubric while a person owns the interpretation, exceptions, and final disposition.
Separate retrieval from decision-making
- Retrieve evidence for each job-related criterion.
- Show the original claim and enough context for a reviewer to verify it.
- Label missing evidence as unknown rather than treating it as proof of absence.
- Do not infer protected characteristics or use proxies for them.
- Require a human to confirm the evidence before a decision is recorded.
Prefer an evidence matrix to a leaderboard
A leaderboard compresses uncertainty into an ordering. An evidence matrix preserves the reason behind every signal, makes gaps visible, and lets a recruiter decide whether a gap is disqualifying, teachable, or simply unanswered.
Audit the workflow, not only the model
Track rubric versions, reviewer confirmations, edits, and overrides. Periodically review whether a criterion is job-related, whether it is applied consistently, and whether candidates from different groups are moving through the process differently.
